Officially a Race Driver!!

Yes, that's right...I passed my ARDS test at Silverstone on Friday!!!

The venue is quite spectacular being the location for the 1st round of the Dunlop Mini Se7en Challenge...quite exciting to be there, thinking the next time will be for real!!

It was good to see the progress of the new stands and track layout since my last visit on a Silverstone Tour and BTCC last year.

I arrived in time for an 8:30am test slot.  There was only a couple of others doing the test the same time as me - one is looking to enter the Fun Cup in a hired car for the full season and the other guy didn't have anything specific in mind quite yet.

We were first briefed on the morning schedule with a little lesson on areas such as racing line, oversteer, understeer, followed by the DVD that comes with the MSA Go Racing pack.  Then straight into the theory exam - nothing to worry about, just make sure you know your flags well (stationary and waved variants) and use a bit of common sense..!

Coincidentally I had already met my instructor for the driving part - he was our tour guide!  We had a bit of a chat then off we went in the Lotus Exige.  The instructor drove for a few laps, slowly building speed but tutoring on correct lines, braking and apex points.  Then it was my turn at the wheel for a few instructional laps on a very slippery Southern Circuit - just one bit of oversteer but corrected so thankfully no spins lol

We stopped for a bit of a chat about any areas for improvement and then I headed off again for a few assessed laps.  I managed to thankfully connect it all up with some decent speed and was delighted to hear I had passed with flying colours :-D  Hopefully I'll be able to drive as well next time on the track in the mini!!!

I drove us back to the Experience Centre to find I had passed my theory, so was presented with a nicely stamped MSA license application form (later posted recorded delivery)!

It was a great day in all, especially because I had the chance to get up close with the testing action on the National circuit - all sorts - Astons, Lambos, Radicals, Clios, Fiestas, CSL, Porsches, Ginettas, etc!  I had to take a spin over to the Porsche Experience Centre for a browse too! A few pics here and a quick video here showing some cars zoom past me on the pit wall!

I'll be doing a full write up on the Race License for the Getting Started area soon, to help any potential novices out there!

Until then, I shall sit here waiting for my race license to drop through the letterbox...come on MSA :-)
